Author manuscripts have been peer reviewed and accepted for publication but have not yet been edited. Grants and fellowships supporting the study: ITT and MIUR sustained the costs of the reagents. AIRC and MIUR sustained the costs of the fellowships. Disclosure statement: The authors have nothing to disclose. Author manuscripts have been peer reviewed and accepted for publication but have not yet been edited. Abstract Objective: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have shown that the 8q24 region harbours multiple independent cancer susceptibility loci, and it was also defined as the " susceptibility cancer region ". Thus, it could be hypothesized that genetic variants within this region could play a role in the risk of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). Research Design and Methods: Six SNPs within 8q24 were analysed, previously associated with the risk of cancer (i.e. rs6983267, rs1447295, rs10808556, rs7000448, rs13254738, and rs13281615) in a population of 1250 patients affected by DTC and 1250 controls from the Centre and Southern Italy.

Association of Arg194Trp, Arg280His and Arg399Gln Polymorphisms in X-Ray Repair Cross-Complementing Group 1 Gene and Risk of Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma in Iran

Background: X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) gene is a DNA repair gene and its non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) may influence DNA repair capacity which has been considered as a modifying risk factor for cancer development. Methods: A case-control study was conducted to investigate impact of three frequently studied polymorphisms (Arg194Trp, Arg280His and Arg3...

The role of Ile3434Thr XRCC7 gene polymorphism in Differentiated Thyroid Cancer risk in an Iranian population

Background: The aim of this study was to understand any association between differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) and Ile3434Thr XRCC7 gene polymorphism (GenBank accession number: rs7830743). DTC is the most prevalent thyroid neoplasm, which includes papillary and follicular cell carcinoma. XRCC7 gene encodes a protein that functions in non-homologous end joining DNA repair pathway. Non-synony...

Associations between XRCC1 Arg399Gln, Arg194Trp, and Arg280His polymorphisms and risk of differentiated thyroid carcinoma: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND Associations between Arg399Gln, Arg194Trp and Arg280His polymorphisms of the XRCC1 gene and risk of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) have been widely studied but the findings are contradictory. METHODS We performed a meta-analysis in the present study using STATA 11.0 software to clarify any associations. Electronic literature databases and reference lists of relevant article...

Mir 143 rs353293 G>A Polymorphism is Not Associated with the Risk of Thyroid Cancer in the Iranian Population: A Case-Control Study

Background: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter region of miRNAs may disturb miRNAs processing, alter their expression, and ultimately affect an individual’s susceptibility to cancer. We conducted a case-control study to evaluate the association of rs353293 G>A with the risk of thyroid cancer in the Iranian population. Methods: 192 patients with thyroid cancer including (pap...

Common Variants at 9q22.33, 14q13.3, and ATM Loci, and Risk of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer in the French Polynesian Population

BACKGROUND French Polynesia has one of the highest incidence rates of thyroid cancer worldwide. Relationships with the atmospheric nuclear weapons tests and other environmental, biological, or behavioral factors have already been reported, but genetic susceptibility has yet to be investigated. We assessed the contribution of polymorphisms at the 9q22.33 and 14q13.3 loci identified by GWAS, and ...
